Psalm Sonnet 75. Praying Out Loud
When I first spoke in praise of you
It was in other tongues--borrowed
From liturgies I had long heard.
Your name gently caressed my lips
Since it had often kissed my ears.
When I first spoke your name out loud
It felt strange--a tender violence,
A meek misappropriation
--to use the name so often heard
--to speak out loud my inmost prayer.
